TUTOR for FE

TUTOR for FE

Why FE schools are using TUTOR

As of August 2022, colleges need to provide 40 additional hours of education provision for their students. We can help with this. We understand that FE budgets are already stretched and colleges are worried about the cost and staffing implications of these additional hours. However, with funding clawbacks threatened if the hours are not put in place, using TUTOR has the added benefit of protecting your funding.

Using an Intelligent Tutoring System like TUTOR alongside teaching provides accessible maths tuition for all pupils, on- and off-site. Teaching staff can quickly and effectively deploy bespoke tuition to students on specific mathematical ideas, and TUTOR’s diagnostic and subsequent personalised tuition pathways secure mathematical ideas to plug knowledge gaps. Replacing or supplementing human tuition with an ITS is a sustainable, long-term solution for greater impact.

What is an Intelligent
Tutoring System?

Intelligent Tutoring Systems are known to be the most impactful form of supplementary education. It may feel slightly counterintuitive, but ITSs have been repeatedly shown to be even more effective than one-to-one human tutoring. An Intelligent tutoring system (ITS) is a computer system that provides immediate and customised instruction or feedback to pupils, enabling learning in a meaningful and highly effective manner. “Within one 10 week intervention cycle, we've had a student with a starting point of 85 increase to 102 whilst another started with 78 and went up to 103! This means they've had the gap closed and are now in line with, or slightly above, age-related expectations.

Then, retesting after 10-weeks without TUTOR intervention [the targeted students] have either maintained, and one has actually carried on improving above this. Our interpretation is that by the gaps being closed, we have been able to further increase their skills, and we've seen that impact translate into the curriculum. It's definitely impacted on their confidence as well - they are now able to access lessons successfully.”

How do FE schools use TUTOR?

How do FE schools use TUTOR?

With a curriculum from early counting to advanced calculus, TUTOR supports all FE learners with maths, and can be used to support maths across the curriculum:

GCSE Maths resit

‘Mastering GCSE Grade’ courses set a progression pathway from any starting point with courses covering GCSE grades 1-9

T-levels

Make tuition accessible on Industry Placement with targeted Functional Skills and Mastering GCSE target courses, or deploy targeted tuition to prepare students before their on-site teaching modules

A-level Maths, Further Maths and Core Maths

Use bespoke courses to prepare students for upcoming topics by securing GCSE content prior to delivery, and consolidate learning to secure their understanding

GCSE grade 2 or below

Enrol students on our Functional Skills Level 1 and 2 targeted courses, or further “tailor a study programme” with teacher-made bespoke courses

Students with complex needs

Numeracy provision for students unable to access formal mathematics qualifications can be supported by TUTOR’s Number and Place Value topic course, or via personalised tuition pathways

Other subjects

Support maths across the curriculum through TUTOR bespoke courses. From ‘Understanding the mean’ and ‘Using scatter graphs’ through to ‘Understanding Confidence Intervals’, TUTOR can support all students with the mathematical understanding they need to be successful in their courses and leave compulsory education mathematically literate

How can I introduce TUTOR to my pupils?

How can I introduce TUTOR to my pupils?

To be counted within ‘Planned Hours’, tuition time on TUTOR needs to be timetabled and organised for students. However, it does not necessarily need to be supervised, or even need to take place on-site. We recommend scheduling a weekly slot, in-person where staffing allows, to access TUTOR, with the option for those who can to access off-site.

Depending on the purpose and the student groups, time spent on TUTOR can be counted towards both qualification hours, through use of TUTOR for exam preparation, and non-qualification hours through scheduled ‘TUTORial’ periods.
