Developing Algebraic Thinking Algebra is much more than manipulating abstract symbols. In this session we will discuss how you can help pupils to begin to think algebraically and apply this throughout their mathematical work. This course is suitable for primary and secondary teachers alike. Gary Lamb 20 July 2020 09:30 1 hour £20
Responsive Teaching In this webinar, we will take a deep dive into what it means to be more responsive in the classroom. Assessment, tasks, pedagogy and the communication of mathematics are part of the cannon that informs crucial decision making with respect to learning. Performance is often a misleading indicator, but a necessary step in the initial steps of learning. We will work on example tasks/prompts that exemplify how we can gain a better idea to whether true understanding has taken place. Corrective teaching is of paramount importance in the mathematics classroom and we will look at some of the research and models of how we can make this work in practice. Cuisenaire - An Introduction In this introductory session we will look at how we can use Cuisenaire Rods to help pupils conceptualise ideas in number, arithmetic and fractions. Cuisenaire is a manipulative with great utility and helps pupils explore and understand relationships, avoiding purely instrumental understanding. Jonathan Hall 23 July 2020 09:30 1 hour £20
Cuisenaire Masterclass A masterclass on the use of Cuisenaire in the classroom. A wide range of engaging and effective tasks will be explored covering key topics within number, algebra and geometry. Jonathan Hall 24 July 2020 09:30 1 hour £20
Teaching for Mastery
Part 1
Part one of two where we will look more practically at how put mastery learning into practice. We shall examine some of the research to support mastery learning and plan a learning episode by considering what the evidence tells us about effective learning strategies. Gary Lamb 27 July 2020 09:30 1 hour £20
Teaching for Mastery
Part 2
Part two of the series where we will continue to plan our way through a learning episode looking taking a closer look at impactful ways in which we can improve worked examples, offer pupils more purposeful practice and how to use tasks that deepen understanding and connect learning. Gary Lamb 29 July 2020 09:30 1 hour £20
Teach, Do, Practise, Behave: Fractions In this webinar we will look how we can phase the learning of fractions using the teach, do, practise, behave model. In particular we will look at a snap shot of how we could teach a learning episode on fractions, including some useful tasks and models to use to offer opportunities to connect idea and build true conceptual understanding. This webinar builds on previous webinars using Cuisenaire Rods and bar modelling. Gary Lamb 31 July 2020 09:30 1 hour £20
Making Maths Memorable Did you know that every day, with all of your classes you are using many of the recommendations that have arisen from the field of cognitive science? In this session we explore the importance of research informed practice and what simple steps we can take to make learning more impactful. Gary Lamb 10 August 2020 09:30 1 hour £20
