Mastery in Mathematics

The Issue

A one-day event for subject leaders and maths teachers in primary and secondary schools.

During the day we will consider the ideas behind a mastery approach to mathematics and explore whether this requires us to make changes to our current practice.

We will address these questions:

  • What does ‘mastery’ mean?
  • What are the implications for teachers in schools?
  • How can we reduce the burden of implementing a mastery philosophy?

The Ingredients

The day will include:

  • The non-negotiables
  • Curriculum design
  • Planning for mastery learning
  • Concrete → Pictorial → Abstract
  • Assessing mastery
  • Implications for teaching, learning and assessment
  • The Ofsted view
  • Problem solving, reasoning
